Align and hang your doors properly

In case, your door is not attached properly, full activation of the lock can never happen. Moreover, in such cases, a door lock may not even function. When the alignments in your door are small it is difficult to notice them. However, even a small misalignment can get magnified within your lock due to mechanical distortion, warping or pressure. When you find your door is sagging or binding, there could be lot of stress on that lock. Make copies of door keys

If you are installing a new lock, it is recommended to save an original key so that you can make copies by approaching an expert locksmith. Keys are more vulnerable to wear and tear as compared to locks and typically there is a warranty on key replacements. However, when your keys show dings of wear, there can be a shift in its structure. If you copy it at that stage, the new one may not function as well as it should. So, when you want your key to function well, ensure that you have a spare copy of your original key.


Locks should be well lubricated and always kept clean

Not all people are aware of the fact that only right tools should be used for cleaning their door locks periodically. Your doors should be lubricated with a dry lubricant or a graphite lubricant annually. Use a gentle detergent and a soft cloth to wipe down your door locks. When you use strong detergent, it can tamper with the finish of the lock and cause damage to it. If you have sophisticated electronic locks, keyless door locks or high security locks, there are specific cleaning techniques for them.
